Barbados Rum Experience

Barbados is known for its gorgeous white sand beaches, its delicious local cuisine, and its vibrant culture. And in addition to all of those things, Barbados is the birthplace of rum and home to the historic Mount Gay Distillery.

Barbados offers a variety of different rums to sample and enjoy, from accessible mixers to highly sought-after bottles of rum. During your stay in Barbados at Casablanca, try some of these recommended rums that are produced or aged on the island! Our concierge can source a specific bottle for you to enjoy and book you in for a rum tasting or distillery tour. Give these rums a try!

1. Foursquare Exceptional Cask Selection (ECS): These limited-edition releases are hand-selected by distillery owner, Richard Seale, and reflect his high standards. These have consistently received industry awards and commendations. Additionally, Foursquare rums do not contain added colours, sugar, or other additives and are prized by rum connoisseurs. Foursquare’s Equidem 14-Year-Old bottle won the 2025 International Wine & Spirits Competition’s (IWSC), which is the highest honour for rum.

2. Doorly’s 12-Year-Old: This is a delightful sipping rum, and it is one of the best value-for-money aged rums. Its flavour profile is elegant, with notes of dried fruit and oak.

3. R.L. Seale’s 10-Year-Old: This classic rum is bottled in a unique, lopsided bottle that’s meant to mimic an old-style leather flask that pirates kept rum in. The flavour profile is distinctly Bajan, with notes of chocolate and coffee, and some light vanilla and fruit notes, such as banana and nectarines. A superb and complex sipping rum.

4. Mount Gay is the world’s oldest commercial rum distillery, founded in 1703, and their style is traditional and assuredly Barbados. The Mount Gay XO (Extra Old) is a delicious blend of spirits distilled in column and pot stills. With a silky smooth texture and lengthy finish, it’s a perfect rum for sipping after dinner and enjoying in the sweet Bajan air. The notes of caramel, dried fruit, dark chocolate, and spice make it a great rum to savour slowly.

5. Mount Gay Black Barrel: This rum contains a blend of rums aged for 3 to 7 years, with a portion aged in charred, ex-bourbon barrels. The flavours are balanced, with notes of toffee, vanilla, and toasted oak, with milder tropical and citrus fruit flavours. This rum is perfect for a sophisticated Old Fashioned, a Manhattan, or for drinking neat.

6. Mount Gay 1703 Master Select: This is a refined recipe of their flagship 1703 marque. It’s long-aged and complex, and flavour notes of green apple, pineapple, and caramel give a nod to dessert without being sweet.

7. St. Nicholas Abbey 15-Year-Old: This luxury rum is bottled in hand-engraved glass decanters with mahogany-enclosed corks, and you can even receive personalized engravings on the bottle if you visit the distillery on the island. The rum is aged on the premises of St. Nicholas Abbey—first for eight years in bourbon barrels, and then batched and rebarrelled for another seven years. Additionally, the sugar cane used in the rum is grown and crushed entirely on the grounds of St. Nicholas Abbey. The rum is known for its dried fruity flavour, with bitter orange, cinnamon, five-spice, and a spiced, leathery finish.

8. St. Nicholas Abbey White Rum: This white rum is sought after for its authentic, white rum flavour. Sugar cane syrup is fermented in a pot and column still and left to sit in stainless steel for three months prior to bottling. It is not chill filtered, to preserve the authentic flavours. It tastes slightly sweet, with notes of creamy fudge, vanilla, hazelnuts, and freshly cut grass and tropical fruit.

9. Planteray XO 20th Anniversary: This luxurious rum was created to celebrate their Master Blender’s 20th anniversary with the company. Heavily inspired by the Master Blender’s love for historic rum-making techniques and creative flair, the rum is a unique blend of the finest, extra-old Barbadian Planteray rum, showcasing depth and complexity. The rum has since been awarded over 55 medals for excellence. It is known for its sweet, coconut dessert taste, with hints of vanilla, oak, and spice.

10. The Real McCoy 12-Year-Old: It is produced by Foursquare, and named after Prohibition rum runner, Bill McCoy. The rum is created without additives, aged in American ex-bourbon barrels for ten years, and another two years in French limousine oak barrels. The taste is caramely, with complex wood and spice notes, orange zest, and just a hint of tobacco. The finish is buttery and peppery, with a hint of smoke.

Our staff can serve these delicious Bajan rums in cocktails like Old Fashioneds, Sours, Old Cubans, or Daiquiris. Or if you’d prefer, they can be paired with coffee and chocolate. Rum tastings can be arranged, or you can enjoy the rum while relaxing in the gardens or by the pool. Our mixologist can recommend pairings and additional brands for your convenience.
